That's my question for today. Why? Why do we write? I don't think there is some simple beautiful answer to this. There are many reasons, often different for each author. Some, obviously for money (not me! I'd be in big trouble if that were the case), some for fun. Some to create.
My father is an artist. A good one. So is my sister. My brother, too. Me? I can barely draw a straight line. Yet, being a right brain person, I needed a creative outlet. And, being incredibly, frighteningly shy growing up, I needed something that was private. So, I started writing poetry at around 7 years old. My brain was not organized enough to keep a diary, so poetry was what I fell into. Poetry led to writing short stories, which went on to writing novels. I'm not going to bore you with some life story, my life is not nearly interesting enough for that, so I write fiction. I loved escaping into books in my Jr High years, Lord of the Flies, A Separate Peace, To Kill a Mockingbird were some of my favorites. Then, at about 12 I discovered Stephen King. To write for fun, to write to entertain! What a concept! While I will always love the classics, I also am drawn to books for the sheer joy of entertainment. (Although, there are many Stephen King books that can absolutely blur the line and make you think in social, moral, political terms).
I hope to be able to find that sweet balance between entertainment and something more. As always, faithful readers,
